It‘s a lovely short book. With a lot of deep meaningful phrases you get stuck thinking about. Sometimes even longer as you intended to.

What do you think is the biggest waste of time?
Comparing yourself to others, said the mole.

This was such a beautiful book.

The story itself is simple but with great impact. Each page has illustrations that just warmed my heart and gave the words even more substantial meaning.

This is more of an unconventional story in the sense that it's just dialog between the boy, the mole, the fox and the horse. But it is written in such a beautiful way that you learn something with each page.

It's one of those books that make you smile and want to re-read it every month. Also, it's inspiring and lighthearted, perfect for everyone no matter the age.

“Isn’t it odd, we can only see our outsides but nearly everything happens on the inside.”

I opened a random page and was faced with this line, and it hit me deeply—how we are often focused on what can be seen and measured on the outside (social image, reputation, presentation, appearance) and how we tend to feel obliged to define our worth by how others perceive us. Meanwhile, the true essence of our existence—our real thoughts, emotions, and internal struggles—remains hidden. We feign toughness and endurance, resisting every opportunity to show our vulnerability and appear human.

This whole book offers a comforting experience for all ages. Some may see its message as sentimental or overly simple, but for me, the merit of this book completely depends on its simplicity. It’s what makes the entire story so precious and nostalgic, creating a quiet space for reflection in a chaotic world and soothing anxiety with its gentle life lessons and beautifully admiring illustrations (the cake looks delicious!).

Lastly, let me end my short review with a quote from the horse’s advice: “Don’t measure how valuable you are by the way you are treated.””

5 stars.

This book is just one big warm hug. And I’ll be coming back to it any time I need that feeling.
The color scheme is also immaculate.

Oh it's so lovely!!!
Please really take the time to appreciate all the illustrations.
And read the intro!

On a much less important note:
I was reading it to my baby cousin, and it was a great opportunity to practice doing voices for different characters, since you know you know from the start there's only going to be 4 of them.
