The Rebel Mages

Laurie Forest

4.3 AVERAGE

Laurie Forest reminds me a lot of SJM in that I find the side characters way more interesting and her idea of a novella is ~250 pages.

This is an anthology of the 2 prequels.

This book is such a great prequel to The Black Witch chronicles. With both WandFasted and Light Mage in it, I loved rereading about how Elloren’s parents met and getting to know the other resistance members that we only briefly meet in other books. I just wish we got more with them, especially during the time of when Vale and Tesla were actively working against The Black Witch. And then we get more insight on how Sage became a part of the resistance and her Icaral baby, which of course is part of what starts the whole series. It all around gives so much more perspective and after my reread, there are many Easter eggs that are then seen again with Elloren during her story. Again, I just wish I had more with these other characters and I just know I will never get about of this series in general.

I was so into reading iron flower that it was a little hard to get into wandfasted at first, but the characters captivated me after about halfway through and I loved getting to meet characters we already knew and getting their backstory. In light mage, I loved how Laurie addressed the assault that happened in the beginning for readers who may want to opt out. I’m sure we’ll see more of Sage and I can’t wait.

Cheesy at times but enjoyable

I thought both romantic plot lines seem rushed but other than that timing was good for novellas. Really enjoyed this backstory

I paused this one to listen to the first book. I just cannot get behind the whole idea of the First People being literally better than everyone else and wars being waged to kill off everyone else in the world that are not them. It absolutely reeks of racism and basically magical nazis.
