Molly is a maid at the Regency Grand Hotel, and very proud of it. She is good at her job, and enjoys the routine and the act of putting things back into pristine condition day after day. But when she finds a hotel guest dead in his bed one day, her entire world is turned upside down.

Molly, our POV character, is undoubtedly on the autism spectrum, a fact which colors her narration and gives her a very particular point of view. She's not quite at the same level as the narrator of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, but the narration is reminiscent of it, in that the narrator states facts and observations without fully understanding a situation, and the audience is left to read between the lines and interpret what’s really going on. Some of Molly’s mannerisms and behavior – primarily, an extremely unbothered and pragmatic attitude toward death and a lack of understanding of social cues – lead the police to find her suspicious, because she’s not behaving in a way that most people would consider “normal” in the aftermath of finding a dead body. And the misunderstandings only pile up from there.

Molly is also quite naïve, takes what people say at face value, and tends to always assume the best about people who are nice to her, or whom she finds appealing. This makes her a terrible judge of character and easily taken advantage of, and her inability to spot shady people and suspicious behavior lead her into precarious situations more than once, though she is not always aware of the danger she is in. But despite her naivete and earnestness, Molly is also quite capable of keeping secrets on behalf of someone she considers a friend (including secrets she keeps from the audience) even if she doesn’t always trust the right people. Luckily for her, she eventually figures out who is trustworthy.

Molly makes for a fascinating and endearing – if sometimes frustrating – narrator. Her point of view makes for an interesting kind of mystery story, in which we often see clues or telltale signs of trouble before our narrator does. She seems somewhat bumbling and clueless early in the book, but once she finally does know what’s going on, and has decent people to rely on, she proves to be delightfully competent, and it’s very satisfying to see. And as bleak as things may look for Molly at times, the story does have a happy ending, although there are a couple of reveals toward the end that I didn’t see coming, which made me view earlier scenes – and a lot of Molly’s early behavior – in a different light.

Overall, a worthwhile read.

I received an advance copy of this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Easy read. Thriller about a hotel maid who struggles with social cues. She’s a spectacular employee who accidentally ends up getting herself into trouble. The end of the book had a twist. I enjoyed this book!

This was a fun listen for bed time. Molly is naive and very sweet raised by her grandma. She works at the fancy Regency Grand hotel. Her coworkers think she's a weirdo and odd. She gets involve in a crime she obviously isn't aware of. She finds Mr. Black dead in his bed at the beginning of the book. The book follows the story of what happens in the next seven days.
