I am absolutely shocked by how much I loved this book. The found family was beyond endearing (especially Mary Jane and Izzy). And while this book certainly tackled serious topics (addiction, societal expectations, etc.) it managed to do so in a way that was both optimistic and realistic, and did not detract from the light-hearted fun which most of the book was. The retro setting tied it all together, being a time when conformity, fame, addiction, and stereotypes are all prevalent issues, while adding yet another fun element through the inclusion of era-appropriate music. I must also say, it’s very hard to pull off a character like Mary Jane without making them annoying, but Blau succeeded with flawless execution.

Jessica Anya Blau captured the essence of 1970s Baltimore through Mary Jane’s eyes was both vivid and nostalgic. Her storytelling beautifully explores the complexities of adolescence, self-discovery, and the contrasting dynamics of family life. The characters felt so real and relatable—I found myself deeply invested in their lives. The blend of humor and heartfelt moments made the narrative truly compelling.
