I really liked aspects of this book, but it didn’t quite live up to the multi-year wait for it.

Silverborn is missing the whimsy and standout characters and settings of the previous books. Much of the book is set in a new location and with new characters, some of whom are fun, but do not fill the void left by those we’ve come to know and love. Morrigan is quite moody throughout, and while it is mostly for good reason, it is frustrating to read about her poor decisions. I wanted more magic and more of a focus on Morrigan’s work with Squall.

I did enjoy learning more background for different characters (specifically Morrigan’s mother and Jack’s parents) and filling in some detail about past events (Morrigan’s bid letters and Jupiter’s rescue of her along with her grandmother’s involvement). I adore Jack and really hope we see more of him in future books. Any scene with Jack or Jupiter was a standout, and we need way more Fenestra in the next book to make up for the lack of her in this one.

While Silverborn may not be my favorite Nevermoor installment, I think its events will have major implications and plant the seeds for the story to expand and go in multiple new directions. Overall, a solid book, but I’m hoping for a return to form in the next one.

A few thoughts:
🩷 Despite these books being more of a youth focused genre, I have really enjoyed each of the Nevermoor installments. Townsend is a very talented & creative writer, & I love the imagination that goes into her stories.
🩷 Morrigan has to wrestle her way through several highly emotional situations for a 13 year old Wundersmith, but I enjoyed the development of old characters & the addition of new ones. There was lots of character growth & you go on a bit of journey as the major relationships in Morrigan’s world go through those changes.
🩷 I enjoyed the mystery element of this book but found it easy to work out who the “bad guy” was. Even if this changed once or twice throughout the story. It was satisfyingly predictable!
🩷 Another great book from Jessica Townsend. How will we wait till the new installment?
