The concept for this book is so good, but the execution is lacking. It's rambling, at times incoherent, and often boring. The characters and their relationships are underdeveloped and not very compelling.  I'm glad that the book was written in order to inspire the musical, which does a much better and tighter job of delivering on the promise of telling the untold story of the Wicked Witch of the West.

I think I’m in a minority of people who haven’t seen the show, haven’t seen the movie, and read this book. So I can’t say the show influenced my feelings about this book.

It sucked. It was boring, it meandered, it felt like the author sat there with a thesaurus next to him and just plugged in words that he thought sounded intelligent. Without giving anything away, it got slightly more interesting at the last chapter. I had a hard copy of this book that I gave away before I finished the audio version because there is no way I’m going to read this book again. And likely will never read this author again.

Like many other reviews, the idea of seeing this classic story through the Witch’s eyes had so much potential. But it was so badly done that I won’t be recommending this book to anyone. This one stays permanently shelved for me.

As a side note for anyone with this concern, this book has several scenes that are for mature audiences. I didn’t feel they added to the story at all, but it is what it is.

I am sure some people can find value in this book...I actually think it has good real life comparisons and is worthy of attention. Because of that I give it two stars. As far as actually being an enjoyable read for me personally, I didn't enjoy it. The author seemed too caught up in his deep thinking to bother with things like character development. I really didn't care about a single person in this book. I appreciate the effort of creating a deeper story for the wicked witch, but it just wasn't enjoyable to me.

I went into this book expecting to love it as much as I loved the musical but I just couldn't. I wanted to love this book but it had too many plot holes and felt just too disjointed to make me feel satisfied with my reading experience. I didn't hate it but I certainly didn't love it.
slow-paced

So I have a hard time making a book a DNF. In fact, I can’t. This book made me want to change all of that. Then I looked at the average rating and decided that there are people like me that feel they wouldn’t have the right to rate a book they didn’t finish. Thus, I finished it so I can give it the honest rating it deserves and others won’t be led into thinking this is a great book.

Yes, I knew it was not like the musical and movie. Yes, I knew it was known for being verbose. What I didn’t expect was a random story telling event in which I felt like was watching someone’s dream while they were on acid. I love the concept of the backstory, but the story fell very flat for me and I would not recommend.
