I wanted to read this after seeing Wicked the movie part 1. And boy was this a ride! It is very very different from the broadway play/movie. Be aware - it is very dark, twisted, and includes many sexual innuendoes. It is very verbose at times and the language used is a bit archaic for 1995. That being said, I did enjoy the story and it was fun to compare to the screenplay. It was an interesting read considering the entire story is politically motivated. I would give this a 2.5

This book is so much more my speed than a play about frenemies or whatever (haven’t seen either version of the musical).
There’s a lot of political stuff — for example, about the munchkins fighting the yellow brick road because that’s how the wizard/emperor wants to redistribute Oz’s water rights away from the poors and into the Emerald City. And talking Animals having all their civil rights taken away, subject to work & travel restrictions etc. And Elpheba wanting the ruby slippers that Glinda gave to Dorothy because they would have made the rebellion more formidable, but Glinda wants a reunification/pacification that would just put the rebelling munchkins back under wizard/imperial control. So… if you like dark fairy tale reimaginings, this seems like a good one. I started with Elphie, which worked just fine.
Moderate: Animal death, Body shaming, Child death, Infidelity, Sexual assault, Violence, Grief, Death of parent, Colonisation, War
It was good but it I couldn’t get into it. It’s very slow moving.
Listening to this book with my wife. I'm enjoying it well enough, especially all the backstory on Elphaba's upbringing and how it relates to the activism present in her later life. Will have more complete thoughts if and when we finish it!
although interesting and fun perspective on the witch’s life it gets in its own way with trying to seem smarter than it is
