VERY different from what I was expecting because the whole storyline was different from the musical. It honestly makes me think the people who turned this book into the musical were so smart because I feel like musical makes more sense than the book's plot. Also some of the story was really starting to drone on in the beginning and at the end... glad I read it but likely won't read again

The musical and movie are entirely different Beasts from this source material. Don't expect it to be as pretty or family-friendly as the adaptations. The book is tragic, thought-provoking, and stirring. The author and narrator do an exceptional job of depicting Elphaba's descent into becoming the Wicked Witch. Maguire fills the reader with understanding and compassion for Elphie despite, and even because of, every wrongdoing. I can't wait to dig into the rest of the series.

I really enjoyed reading Wicked as a contrast with the musical (and now film) adaptations.

In comparisson, the book has much more depth to the characters and has a deeper exploration of Elphebas politics and inner world. It also spans Elphebas entire life. Themes of capitalism, discrimination, elitism, politics. The middle of the book is a little slow but overall loved it.

My mother and I love the movie and broadway versions of Wicked. She bought me a copy and I read it first. I was disappointed because it was nothing like the musical I loved. The characters and plot were all completely different from their musical counter parts, and the themes of the broadway weren’t as powerful or all there.

I thought some of the differences were interesting. In the book Nessarose doesn’t have arms whereas in the musical her legs are disabled. It was probably made for easier adaptation.
Instead of Glinda being snobby rich girl she like in the broadway she was a snobby well-off girl.
I think she died in the book. Idk.

Fiyero has a whole family???? And an affair with Elphaba???

A whole paragraph was dedicated to describing Elphaba’s pubic hair. I stopped reading the.
