Interesting is pretty much the one word that comes to mind. The writing style is good (I think) but very twisty/turvy and kooky. Definitely not a book I was on the edge of my days to get to. I feel like I just ran a marathon and am very relieved to have crossed the finished line. phashew. The broadway show will be different I'm sure. Excited about that.

Enjoyable fantasy. Turns The Wizard of Oz on it's head with Glinda cast as a nasty piece of work and the Wizard as a political tyrant!

Excellent, i can't wait to read it again and again and digest it over and over. The struggle of Elphaba and her battle with her own miserable life. The way everything wrapped up in the end. All of the themes wrapped into this lovely present of the life of the wicked witch of the west. It's a world I would gladly come back to again and again. In fact I'm very excited to see what will be happening in the world with her son...

The plot? Definitely interesting. I just loathed the writing style. You never knew who's POV you were in and there were no obvious switches.

I'd wanted to read the book ever since I became aware of the musical, via a joke in a Once Upon a Time Wicked Always Wins edit on youtube of all places. And I suppose the release of the movie was the push I needed.
The plot and characterization in the book differ quite significantly from the musical, in that there is a lot of plot and little characterization in the book. The book seemed more of a text on the history and anthropology of Oz, focusing more on the "times" rather than the "life" of the eponymous Wicked Witch of the West. I must acknowledge however that my expectations from the book were heavily influenced by what I knew of the musical, and as of 2024, the movie.
If I were to judge this for what it was before it inspired one of the most popular musicals of the 21st century, it is quite an interesting expansion on the original Oz as created by L. Frank Baum. As tedious as it was in some parts to read, though this is not solely a discredit to the writing, it did keep me reading, anxious to find out what would happen next. I also must acknowledge that this was like really funny in parts, to the extent that I had to breathe out, so I wouldn't laugh out loud in the library.
Probably wouldn't re-read this one though.

It wasn’t as good as I remembered it to be. I enjoyed the first half exponentially more than the second half.

Elphaba felt held at a distance throughout the entire book. I didn’t feel I knew her even by the end.
