This book was a bit of a disappointment for me. It was surprisingly edgy. I'm such a fan of the Wizard of Oz as a wholesome children's series. It's a good book, though. The muscial is phenominal!

Not a fan of the author's tendency to add grotesque details when it didn't add to the story or character detail and were just strange.

The book was slow and more dark than I expected. It was not enjoyable and I had many other things more worthy of my time.
One reason I read this book is because there's a recently very good musical of it (and a hit too). Check it out, everyone I managed to get listening to it, was hooked on instantly, especially girls.
Back to the book. This book is rather slow and rambling. Read it if you don't mind that. I think it helped a lot if you know Wizard of Oz story by L. Frank Baum (sp?), because in this story it turns your "Wicked Witch" into a misunderstood Witch (who isn't a bad character after all). In fact everything in this story is tied up very cleverly with the Wizard of Oz story. Oh wait, there's some discrepancies, but I can't remember any right now, and I have to think about it because the plot is rather complicated, especially when you take into account the original story. If I remember rightly from somewhere, Maguire did not only base his book on Frank Baum book only, but also the 1939 (?) movie, which is not the same from the original book.

Sluggish at times, pedantic at times, but an enjoyable and thoughtful read nonetheless. I listened to the audio book to get through the slow times - ie the beginning of Part Two.
EDIT: I originally gave this a 3.5. But over time, I find myself thinking about this book surprisingly often. In fact, it has caused my affection for the musical to wane. Maguire's imagery and world-building has stuck with me. The themes are so deeply interrogated and well developed in the story.
Only 4 stars though because of the pacing and overall writing style.

Totally not what I expected. Dark. Inappropriate. Crude. Hard to follow. I wish I loved this more.
