This book was remarkably boring but somehow I was still very invested and enjoyed it. Very little happened and the characters were bizarre and unrelatable but the basic premise is so strong that the satisfaction of seeing a story I knew inside this weird political drama carried me through. It’s more complex and therefore more successful than the play/movie in leading the reader to consider and inhabit the witch’s perspective. The writing is interesting and enjoyable. At the end, I didn’t feel emotional. It felt inevitable, which, of course, it was. This is a rambling review for a rambling book.
This was not the glittering, girl-power fairytale I had grown to love on stage and screen. It is so much darker, deeper, and more political, it gives Elphaba a powerful backstory that’s stayed with me. Can’t wait to dive into the rest of the series!
Perverted and fetishy lowkey
Graphic: Animal death, Child abuse, Death, Drug use, Hate crime, Pedophilia, Racism, Sexual content, Slavery, Violence, Xenophobia, Murder, Colonisation, Deportation
Couldn't even finish it! It dragged.... And dragged.... And dragged.......

My thoughts are complicated on this one. It's so different from the musical and I don't want to hold the book against how much I love the musical given that the book came first. I would almost argue that the book and the muscial aren't really the same story. I did enjoy reading this, it was propulsive enough to keep the pages turning. However, I didn't love the writing style and found it confusing at times. I also thought that the book was oddly and unnesecessarily sexual at times. Like.... I just don't need to know that the pass through the mountain range looked like it was going into a woman's spread legs? All in all, glad I read it so I can call myself a dedicated Wicked (the musical) fan, but I don't think I'll continue with the rest of the series.

Way too much time spent on some parts of the story and other more interesting and important plot points were rushed through. It didn't need to be that long.
