I don’t think I can find the right words to describe this book. It was so beautiful. The writing was incredible and had a strong emotional grip on me from start to finish. And of course, as all my favourite books do, it’s ending made me cry. It was a similar feel to the end of the song of achilles, without the pain of death; a peaceful release of emotion with some joy that the Lore and Castor were reunited.

*small spoiler, I guess* but am I the only one wondering about what happened to Castor’s dog Chiron? Like he fled Castor’s bedroom and was never mentioned again... like why? Why even put a dog in the story if he wasn’t going to be there at the end of the book happy and safe? I don’t know, I guess it’s the animal lover part of me that’s just a little annoyed by that.

I loved this book! It was Greek mythology meets Hunger Games. The characters drew me in. I loved how the houses and the new and old gods intertwined. I felt the end was lacking a bit but was happy enough with it to still give it 5 stars. I had a few 8th graders who read it and loved it as well. I would give it to anyone younger than that. Definitely worth the read.

I was really looking forward to this book, but in the end, I was too annoyed by the structure that I just did a speed read to get through the last half. One thing I can’t stand is when an author creates a complicated world and instead of letting it unfold slowly, the author does a periodic “data dump” of a few paragraphs very early on explaining it. It reads more like a pitch to an editor than part of a novel. Successful series like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Hunger Games, Divergent, and Infernal Devices often let the reader settle in and slowly figure out how each world works, who’s in charge, who has power (and why), and the limitations and reach of those with power. Often, one character is new to the world, and his/her discoveries about how things work are the readers’ discoveries as well. The data dump just dumps a lot of complicated rules and histories on you before you care about any of the characters.

Imagine if JK Rowling had just explained how the wizard world worked, how Hogwarts worked, and explained the rules about the houses and the sorting hat in a few paragraphs at the very beginning, instead of connecting with Harry at the beginning and then seeing the wizard world for the first time from Harry’s point of view? There was an opportunity here for a good story, but I didn’t enjoy this book.

Lore also jumps around in time, which I found to be annoying; either go back in time to put current events in perspective or do the data dump. Doing both was tedious. Would have been better to go in chronological order and let the reader figure out how things work from the perspective of a young Lore.

3.5☆

I am so pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book! I didn’t really know what to expect but it was just SO GOOD! Alexandra Bracken did an incredible job with weaving a fantastic story into a standalone novel. The characters were great, I loved the whole main cast so much. The story was interesting and really pulled me in, I didn’t want to put it down. Definitely kind of brutal/gruesome at times and deals with some heavy topics, but it fits very well into those scenes and has a purpose to the story. Highly recommend!
