This is a one-of-a-kind experience. I spent hours mapping the multitude of references to different pages, chapters, appendices, exhibits, etc. and still missed so much now that I'm reading other people's takes. The Navidson Record itself (not the commentary) and Johnny's mother's letters were my fav parts hands down. I'm still confused about who's "real" and who isn't -- no one is a reliable narrator.
One of those novels that gave me 'Adult Fear'. Reading it is a tense experience; the events described in The Navidson Record have a disquieting tendency to make you look at what you thought was once safe and serene, and find it now, wholly lacking.
Really wanted to love this. I think it's a cool idea that footnotes slowly devolve and become less relevant and scattered as the characters minds and lives also devolve, but I found it mostly a chore to read, especially as the footnotes started to span multiple pages.
Was too long winded for very minimal enjoyment.
