First and foremost this book is about the amazing, uplifting joy of female friendships (and solidarity) the feeling of this book is heartwarming (with a side of family drama and tmen🤢🤮) and each time i picked the book up it felt like being welcomed back into the friendship group. While at first glance of the synopsis, the descriptions seem cookie cutter and stereotypical, each of the 4 truly feels like a real person. They are so complex and distinct with strengths and flaws, secrets and troubles. They make me laugh, roll my eyes and gasp, even tear up at some moments.
Every step of the way you root for these women; giggling and swooning when they do, getting upset when they are treated badly, (side eye literally 90% of the men at oxford, misogynistic pricks😤!).

There is so much heart in this book and it feels so sincere. The small moments shared amongst friends and peers are highlighted and add so much life to the story. The breadth of side characters is really what makes this feel the setting and university feel like reality!  It is so amazing to follow their journeys with the writing so immersive and witty (loved Otto) it felt as though you were experiencing 1920 oxford right with them, the atmosphere surrounding you.

A great character-driven historical novel that touches on the effects of WWI on society, the impact it had in improving womens lives but also the progress that was still to be made - all with an amazing, witty group of women with such comradery you'll fall in love with their friendship🩷 ps some of this book made me shed tears

Life’s too short to read a book that compares disabled people to locusts😵‍💫

Absolutely superb

Though I love stories around female friendships, and this one should have been most interesting, about the women at Oxford who would get to graduate for the first time, starting off their academic term in 1920, this one starts off as rather bland. I couldn’t tell three of the characters apart and was only able to distinguish the fourth one because she had a masculine name (Otto) and because the narrator used a very upper crust cut glass accent for her in the audiobook I listened to.  The suitors were mostly blah so that wasn’t exciting either. The second half became interesting when we found out more about the girls and their desires and aspirations and flaws and follies.
I still enjoyed parts of it, but this is one of those books that would’ve benefited from a more diligent and able editor.
