i really liked this at the start and then by halfway i was bored. i didn’t like all the interludes, started just skipping them toward the end. i would read more by winterson but this one just wasn’t quite there for me.

Objectively very artistic and beautiful and nicely written but can be hard to follow along at times. The tales sprinkled throughout elevates the experience at times revealing how Jeannette sees herself but other times i just feel lost. I feel as if u can only get a true and meaningful experience that is intended if you’ve read the bible + bigger classics bc there’s huge allusions to both and they run as the undercurrent. Still it’s a book abt a lesbian and her strained relationship with her mum so I was bound to get smth out of this

My expectations were high going in to this book because of how Jeanette wrote Written in the Body. But this one just fell flat. It was okay, nothing memorable.

This was really beautiful, but kind of in a sad way. I loved reading it because of my sister's annotations, picking up on all sorts I never noticed and reminding me how clever she is. The fairytale aspect was really interesting as well.
