maybe I would’ve liked it more if I was more religious?

Beautifully written, tragic and funny in equal measure and meaningful throughout.  My Pride pick for 2025.

Reading this after Giovanni’s Room felt like an illegal punch to the back of the head while I’m already lying in the fetal position.

Jeanette Winterson is currently my favorite author. I love that her use of dry humor and her blunt dialogue and narration make the everyday awful and absurd events feel so real. Your life changing forever is usually done quietly without your knowing, and all at once over something you thought was so trivial. That’s kind of funny.

I think Winterson plays with time in a very subtle and beautiful way. She connects different times and ages in ways to at feel so natural you almost aren’t aware years have slipped by.

Jeanette’s mother reminds me of my dad. If I can be hopeful about anything because of this book, it’s that some loved ones never really change how they treat you. They make a fuss and kick you out and call you possessed but then your back in their house, eating their fruit, listening to them pretend nothing ever changed. On second thought, this isn’t really hopeful, but there is comfort in a loved one pretending so they can keep you in your life.

some of the best writing i’ve encountered in a minute. her musings on history and its construction floored me.
love some northern queer childhood  representation like i’m not crying at all.

reminded me a lot of notes of a crocodile with the parallel narratives- creating alternate versions of your life to escape/cope.
as a firm believer in mood reading and books coming to you when you need them- this was a gift to my teenage self.
