Bizarrely, given the protagonist's predicament of growing up in a strict Christian household, this novel was a touchstone for many young women dealing with coming out in the eighties and nineties. It has a cultural resonance that probably is bigger than its literary merit but Winterson went on to write even better novels.

This book definitely wouldve impacted me more if i was raised religiously and British but i am an american who has been to church a couple of times so a lot of it slipped past me. This read very quickly and i generally enjoyed how it was told. The ending of the book is incredible and i was shocked by the amount of quotes at the end. I think id read this again but mostly just so i could experience the ending again
