i respect the style and think this is written very well, but for once i wanted a book to tell me more. i think my lack of background knowledge of the church and bible stories definitely lessened the power of the novel-- i could almost always sense this underlying vein of meaning that i kept missing. the final chapter, ruth, is amazing
