OANTOF is slower pace than some of the other books I have been reading, and at times the cuts to biblical stories are odd, but I think this only feeds well into Jeanette’s narration and the complexities of her identity. The stories help to guide the reader to understand how Jeanette feels while keeping the distance from 1st person narration. I felt that that by the end, despite leaving the church, Jeanette had not yet found herself and wasn’t sure of her place in life, which is different from a lot of books which insert a happily ever after ending. I’m left reflecting on Jeanette and her story rather than having the end given to me & having that closure shoved in your face.
“I love both of them”
*screams into a pillow*
I read this for my Women and Literature class but it was on my 2025 TBR funnily enough. I loved the symbolism and I loved Jeanette’s journey. Definitely recommend for my queer friends who grew up in a religious household. It gives us a sense of understanding, at least in my opinion.
