I’ve read this book once before but saw it on my shelf and decided to pick it up again, and I’m so glad I did. Such a beautifully written book that is heart wrenching and relatable while also being fantastical. Love it so much.

It was a brilliant story about a young girl's difficult journey into adulthood. From a young age, she has been taught that there are 'Unnatural Passions' and that these, being Catholic, are forbidden. Growing up she finds out that she is attracted to women, and this is where life gets complicated. Being a devout Catholic and being homosexual do not mix well. She handles everything her Catholic life throws at her with such strength that you cannot help but be inspired by this amazing story of resilience. A sad story, yes - but also first-class.

"But on wild nights who can call you home?"
"Only the one who knows your name."
This was a beautifully written, albeit confusing at times, book. The switch between narration and story telling was not always seamless but the overarching themes met with fantastically illustrated overtones of family and love really drew me in. A wonderfully presented perspective on being gay/lesbian in a religious upbringing and I can't recommend it enough.

Predictable, but light and an easy read. Would do very well as YA reading. Hypocrisy of the church in a small town in England, denial of homosexuality of genetic origin, kindness to far-away savages while stonewalling neighbors. Nothing new as far as theme goes, but a pleasant read.

"As it is, I can't settle. I want someone who is fierce and will love me until death and know that love is as strong as death... I want someone who will destroy and be destroyed by me."
Jeanette Winterson tells a powerful story of a girl navigating curiosity in an environment that forbids it. It is a beautiful tale of love and betrayal in their many forms. This story felt as if we were growing up alongside Jeanette - I spent the entirety rooting for her to make it out the other side. The only thing that kept me from giving this 5* was the metaphoric prose - sometimes it felt a bit overworked, and I found myself wanting to skip through it to get back to Jeanette's story.
