The childhood (and maybe memoir?) parts were the most interesting to me. The stories sprinkles through the rest of the book didn’t really work. I think this is the second Winterson book I’ve tried, and I just don’t really vibe with her writing!
While a fascinating read, it is NOT for the faint of heart. I do not recommend anyone of the LGBT+ community reading this book unless they have little fear. I read this, thinking little of fear at the time, and woke up last night in a cold sweat with tears streaming down my face after having a nightmare about exorcisms.

Graphic: Homophobia, Religious bigotry
Moderate: Sexual assault
As a queer woman who is similarly estranged from her hyper-religious parents, I think I was expecting something more conclusive. As it is, this story is so open-ended it almost doesn’t feel like a complete thought.
There is nothing she has written that I don’t love. Her command of language is amazing. This one is a classic. Her toxic mother, religious subjugation and a sexual awakening. It has everything.
