I struggled with some of the back and forth of this book and am a bit confused because I was under the impression that it was bout the author’s life yet it is classified as fiction. Winterson was adopted into a evangelical community by a mother who was fully devoted to the church and believed herself to be God’s elite. Her childhood was rather rigid and as she grows up she finds herself with feelings she is unable to identify or categorize because they are not common in her community. Oranges are woven throughout the book as offerings of peace within her family and in a way could represent the notion that there is only one way of seeing the world but Winterson wants to look past this once she realizes there are other belief systems which she may better identify with.
Ciekawym doświadczeniem było przeczytanie tej częściowo autobiograficznej powieści Jeanette Winterson, opowiadającej o dorastającej w bardzo religijnej rodzinie Jeanette, której życie zostało podporządkowane przez jej matkę Bogu i wspólnocie. Religijne wychowanie nie idzie jednak w parze z doświadczeniami okresu dojrzewania, kiedy dziewczyna odkrywa i stara się zrozumieć siebie oraz swoją seksualność.
Największą zaletą tej historii była przede wszystkim wyczuwalna od pierwszych stron autentyczność. Można było wyczuć, bliski związek autorki z opisywanymi wydarzeniami, zwłaszcza po przeczytaniu napisanej przez nią przedmowy, w której zwraca uwagę na jej w pewnym stopniu autobiograficzny charakter.
Duży aspekt tej opowieści stanowi religia w bardzo radykalnej formie, jej wpływ na wychowanie, a także negatywne podejście do homoseksualności głównej bohaterki. Tematyka ta zostaje przedstawiona w głównej mierze poprzez trudne, często toksyczne relacje z zaangażowaną w życie duchowe i wspólnotowe matką.
Ze względu na niespecyficzny charakter i formę tej powieści, poza rozwijającym się podstawowym wątkiem fabularnym, pojawiają się tutaj także krótsze historie stylizowane na baśnie lub legendy, które przyznaję, były moim zdaniem najsłabszym elementem historii i nie budziły we mnie chęci analizowania ich w kontekście poznawanej historii.

I read this in college for a gay & lesbian lit class and really loved it. I went on to read another Winterson novel and her fabulous memoir.

I’ve never read a book so chaotic, dull, whimsical and allegorical all at the same time. The narrative style is more like a stream of consciousness, peppered with some random Arthurian fairy tale.
Centered around a gay main character and her Bible-thumping mother, it has plenty of metaphors and is the kind of book you’d savour slowly – what is being said is just as important as what isn’t being said. The plot/characters are secondary to the theme. But the main character is so peculiar and unrelatable – and given that this is somewhat autobiographical in nature, I’m not sure if I’d pick up her other books even if she has a way with words.

I also happened to be reading Sapiens at the same time, which puts human religions in a whole new light, and it definitely affected my thoughts on Christianity and this book.
