A 4.5/5 really.

There was a lot that could have been compelling about this book. The author clearly has familiarity with a fundamental religious community, the details of the story are specific and rich. But I couldn't connect with the main character or her emotions, and the interludes about knights and wizards seemed pointless to me. It's a very short book, and it took me a long time to finish it.

Eh. Except for The Passion, which I read in college, Winterson has felt dated and disappointing to me.

I really loved this book. There are definitely some issues. I think that some of the fairytales interjected throughout the book can make the story disjointed. There’s also a chapter in the book that felt like more like the author thoughts than Jeanette’s. There were a couple funny moments in this the book that made me laugh. I loved Jeanette’s character growth. She became more confident and stood up for herself. This book is really relatable even if you didn’t grow up in an extremely religious family like Jeanette. The ending was also really relatable and realistic in terms of mother daughter relationships.
