I had a hard time remembering that this was set in the UK and not in the southern US. My brain just really wanted to put this coming-of-age story about a girl growing up in a pentecostal family in, like, Georgia. I kept having to wrench myself back to Britain every time a character's accent leaked through.

I found Winterson's writing style a little confusing. Part of it was the British English, and I thought another part might be Winterson giving a quirky affectation to the narrator, but in retrospect I wonder if character affected Winterson's writing or the other way around. In any case, I found myself not knowing what she was talking about or what was going on in the story on many occasions. What I did understand of the story was compelling, though, and Winterson is a very clever writer.
