Ladies and gentlemen and nonbinary folks alike, this volume has bestowed upon us unworthy mortals three phenomenal characters; Kurama, Hiei, and Genkai, and the world is a better place because of them.

I don't really have a lot to say about this volume other than it was a good introduction to each previously mentioned character. Kurama's a compassionate badass, Hiei is a little shit but I love him, and Genkai is one of the FUCKING BEST female characters in shounen action series. The epitome of no fucks left and badassery, she's the whole package and I love her.

Not much else I want to talk about, having fun rereading this series and looking forward to more.

Always a joy to return to old manga that is still fun.

Ah, the shift in tone! This is where we finally meet Kurama and Hiei, and the first use of the rei gun! And, we meet the legendary Genkai!

Underworld Detective, Yusuke Urameshi!

Takeaways this volume:
  1. Kuwabara loves cats.
  2. Botan can take on many guises. Ie. She plays dressup as a student, a fortune-teller, etc.
  3. Adults still trying to frame students at Sarayashiki High.
  4. FINGER GUN! aka Rei ("spirit") Gun!
  5. Introducing Kurama and Hiei. (Why do all these characters have such cool hair?)
  6. Continuing the theme of most people having some goodness inside them, despite appearances to the contrary.
  7. Urameshi gives a part of his life to save Kurama. Can't let another mother mourn the loss of her son, right?
  8. And now the Hunter Exam begins!

Apparently, it's going to get even more shonen from this point on. Let's go~ !

now that's what i'm talking about! we're finally getting to the good stuff~
but now that we are heading toward Yusuke learning about reiki, we begin veering away from the name of the manga (Yuyu Hakusho / Ghost Files / Poltergeist Report) and more toward (The Dark Tournament / How Much Unfair Punishment Can You Take?)... in other words: less detective more fighting 😅
