I always like the point where a YA series turns from adventures to a desperate fight for freedom, and this book is no exception.
Quite the tragic turn of events at the end, but they set up for some potentially good ways out.
The first half is a bit frustrating as the focus is placed on rebuilding and crumbling over and over again for the main character, but it finds its direction very well for the second half.

This is the first book in the series where I found myself caring slightly about Celaena, even though she spends the majority of the book being insufferable. It isn't until about 2/3 of the way through that she has a breakthrough and finds herself making progress in her life.

Having said that, I still found everyone else's stories much more interesting than Celaena's.  I'm a fan of Aedion, and the witches were a great side plot to read.

Some of Celaena's flashback scenes were tough/emotional to read, but in the end, she gets where she needs to go. Mostly.

Very worth getting through the second book to enjoy this one! The threads weave together wonderfully in this world as the history and current machinations come together. We (finally) get a lot of character development from our favs, and a lot less annoyingly clunky exposition from a ghost queen and a door knocker from Queens. Rowan is obviously the high point. In a genre littered with hot/brooding/grumpy teachers paired with tiny/mouthy/stubborn women training their wild power, Rowan and Aelin’s growing relationship strikes a great balance. There’s tension, but more importantly there’s trust.
I really appreciated that this book dialed down the romance a bit.

I believe this might be my favorite so far. Watching Celena work through her trauma was just as heartbreaking as it was cathartic.
My only qualm, was the switch between POVs. It did throw me an off once in a while because I would be so invested in that current story and then I’d be swiped away to something else. I did think it helped paint the picture but man was this book good. I loved how SJM was also able to tie together so many small moments from the other books and Celena’s past to end with such a bang. It was truly a great book with wonderful character development, world-building, introduction to new characters and spaces, and overall the build up of this powerful enemy. Loved it!
