I watched the anime for this light novel a few years ago and I was very intrigued by the light novel when I discovered it had one but then, for years, the books lay in my tbr and didn't see light (pun intended?) until now.

This book has a writing style that's a bit...too much, as in, it explains too much, even when it's not needed. This was even more apparent in the second part of the novel because though, there wasn't much happening in the second part, it still dragged on and on. I think it's fair to say that I didn't like the writing style very much.

The plot, itself, on the other hand wasn't as bad. It was pretty decent as a mystery actually but there was the whole supernatural angle that was left a bit too vague and ambiguous that I didn't quite enjoy. It was creepy and atmospheric, to be sure, but not exactly solidly structured. In fact, the whole time I kept wondering why they couldn't just have removed third year class 3. Like once the students advanced from second to third, just divide the class 3 students between the other classes and not have it at all. I don't think they ever even acknowledged it as a possibility.

And, the characters, most of them were bare sketches apart from the main ones like Mei and Kouichi. Teshigawara, Kazami and Mochizuki had some traits but they were mostly two-dimensional. As a matter of fact, I wasn't even very taken in by our narrator, Kouichi. The only character that really interested me was Mei Misaki. I wouldn't say I liked her but I did enjoy reading about her.

The thing that irked me the most about this book (as a whole) though was that the author didn't provide us with a very important bit of information until the end, which made the mystery unsolvable. Even though, I had watched the anime and knew the ending, I couldn't connect a specific plot twist until it was right in my face, which honestly annoyed me so much because it's quite clear that the author did it to keep us on our toes and still away from the final answer.

Overall, I would say the book is okay. Not the best mystery I've ever read. It's creepy, for sure, and I like it for the most part but it had also some glaring problems that kept me from enjoying it completely.

Bottom line: A goot attempt at mystery but not the best.
