I wanted to like this book, but it really could have been done better. I few complaints I have:

  • Repetitive - The author kept just repeating backstory that had already been told.
  • Narrators - The books is told in first person from the view of multiple characters. Having perspectives from Emery and August made sense. But other minor characters also had chapters from their perspective. These chapters did not really advance the story at all since, as described above, the backstory they contributed was later told to the the readers through August or Emery. One character basically has a the stereotypical villain monologue at the end, which felt forced.
  • Too much telling, not enough showing - We never really got to see why August and Emery fell in love. Instead, we were just told they loved each other over and over again. But nothing in the story made it clear why they even liked each other. This book would have been way better if the author had trusted the reader more.
  • Dissatisfying ending - The second to last chapter was so disappointing. The climax was over in like a second, yet it didn’t resolve most character relationships (other than Emery and August).
  • Not enough nuance - Without mentioning any spoilers, there were a lot of relationships between characters that had the potential to be complex and interesting. However, these nuances were hardly explored at all, which is a shame. It ended up seeming more like inconsistent characterization intended to set up plot twists for the reader.
  • Main characters spent very little time together - There were surprisingly few scenes between Emery and August until maybe 60 to 70% through the book. As a result, their relationship seemed rushed.
