The oldest books among them... the Necronomicon, the Pnakotic Manuscripts, contained the accounts of prehumanity...the fiendish myths of these elder thing's whose substance an alien evolution had shaped...they who ruled over this world in a time when primitive, archaic mammals scuttled at the feet of massive sauropods, roaming the tropical steppes of Europe and Asia...
No single set of carvings which we encountered told more than a fraction of any connected story. Nor did we even begin to come upon the various stages of that story in their proper order. And perhaps as a geologist that was not my task in the first place...
Every now and then you come across something very special. The first volume was my secret santa gift for 2022 and the mystery colleague who picked it out for me was spot on with what I like.

Lovecraft|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1299165714p2/9494.jpg]'s classic story really brings the tale to life. The artwork captures the stunning imagines that Lovecraft's words convey and perfectly capture the otherworldly creatures that feature within.
Following an Antarctic expedition set up by the Miskatonic University, based in Arkham, the intrepid adventurers soon happen upon a previously undocumented Mountain range in the bleak wilderness of ice and snow.
Determined to explored further and to try and discover the more about the intriguing rock formations, the expedition splits into two groups. However, when a storm hits and radio signals stop being transmitted from one group, there is only one thing on everyone's mind. The expedition has become a rescue mission.
Finding the other camp completely destroyed and all but one of the members of the group dead, the rescue party have tough choices to make. Deciding to try and find the missing man, they fly over the peak of the Maintains to see if they can find any signs of life and to try and understand what possibly could have happened at the camp.
Once over the peak, what they find is beyond belief. A huge ancient city of epic proportions that would rewrite the very history of the world. Landing nearby and finding a way into the structures, they find links to the signs that Abdul Alhazred's Necronomicon may be more than the mad ravings that many thought it to be!
A stunning finale to this two volume masterpiece. 5 stars.
