3.57 AVERAGE

To be fair, I had somewhat lowered expectations for this book because I didn't really care for _My Year of Rest and Relaxation_.

OM is known for - shall we say - "disagreeable* narrator/protagonists. This one is no different. Our titular character is a self-loathing, constipated misanthrope telling her story from 50 years in the future. Hindsight is, of course, 20/20, but OM wields it judiciously so that we don't experience an omniscient Eileen.

Remarkable and disturbing and riveting.

Absolutely no plot but, Eileen's characterization was entertaining and somewhat relatable until the end. I probably would not have liked it if it was any longer. I'm easily swayed by books about recovering Catholics who want to kill their fathers. I <3 the discussion of compulsions & intrusive thoughts.

3.5

I kept waiting......

maybe her most likable character ????

I get that the point is that Eileen is profoundly dislikable and that we feel sorry for her but nothing else has happened and this is like halfway through the book. I need to switch to something else for my sanity in the February that never ends

David Sedaris recommended this book on his 2016 tour. It's great, dark and disturbing but a great fast read.
