Really brilliant, disturbing writing. A bit too visceral for me at times, but a taut, superbly told, quiet tale.

I actually really liked this. My jaw dropped towards the end. If you like character studies, unreliable narrators, a non traditional timeline, and really dark themes you’d probably like this. I think Eileen captures the epitome of self
loathing, body dysmorphia, and depression. I loved how it was narrated by the future character so we know that she did somehow recover and but we have no idea how she got there after the ominous and murky ending.

Now THIS is the kind of literature you can wake me up for!!! ❤️‍🔥

I read most of this in one sitting, lying on a bed in the spa - which feels like exactly the vibe you need to be in when reading this. There is a chilly tone to the book, both in the frosty weather and the relationships that Eileen has with the people around her. Let alone the way she sees herself.

Eileen is quite popular on Bookstagram, and I think that has a lot to do with the way that Moshfegh creates unlikeable characters that you can't help but recognizing a bit of yourself in. Of course, the proportions of their selfishness, co-dependency and other problematic behaviour is blown up, but it still feels like you're reading about a universally female experience.

Moshfegh might just be the writer for me.

This would have done soooo well on 2012 tumblr, very “normal people scare me” coded. Truly a femcel classic. But Moshfegh writes gross, lonely women so thoroughly that I can’t even be mad at the self pity. 3.5 stars for mid pacing.

love a good character study of a mentally unwell waif from the 60s, so I enjoyed this one. The story itself was short on plot until the very end, but the reveal was a surprise (at least to me). Dark and very disturbing, this may not be for everyone.

P.s.  I watched the movie right after reading and found it much less provocative due to its lack of an interior monologue.
