Rereading this with an adult’s eyes, I marvel at the “pioneer spirit” that led them out into a world with very little backup. They expected to be on the leading edge of the whites families coming west across the country. (It’s no secret that the next book has the family somewhere else!) There is discussion about how the Native Americans keep getting pushed west—as much as this little 6-7 year old girl could understand or what she was told. There is a lot of description of how Pa and Ma build the house, make it livable, and really make it home. But there are also times of danger—illness, animals, and the Indians. There a lot of talk about how scared they were. I didn’t remember all the danger they faced. I really enjoyed rereading this and plan on picking up my old childhood copies to read again soon.

I owned this book as a child but for some reason never wanted to read it. I guess I just convinced myself it was boring or something. Whatever it was, I decided to finally read it. And to be honest, I wish I hadn't been so stubborn as a kid.
This is the sort of book I would have really enjoyed as a kid. Which isn't to say that adults can't enjoy it if reading for the first time, but there is definitely something about it that feels good for kids. It shows a lot of the dangers that come from this life, and it doesn't sugarcoat or try to be fake about the relationship between white settlers and Native Americans. The attitudes of the settlers felt pretty realistic. I was actually impressed by how Laura's father responded to Native Americans. He wasn't a complete saint about it either, which I think added to the truth of his attitude. It's hard to be too critical of it when looking at it through the lens of that point in history.
It's a pretty simple story. It's just this one family's experiences and how they dealt with things as they happened. There's enough excitement and adventure to engage kids while also providing some great topics for discussion.

I liked this next book in the series better than Little House in the Big Woods, but not quite as much as Farmer Boy.
This detailed the story of the Ingalls’ family’s journey from the Wisconsin woods to the open prairie, their efforts to build a new home, meet new neighbors, and realize that they should not have tried to homestead on Native American land.
There is some talk of how it was the white man’s right to conquer the land for farming.
It was interesting to hear Laura’s viewpoint as a young kid along for this adventurous ride with her parents and siblings.
4 stars.
