WHAT THE FRICK FRACK WAS THAT EPILOGUE MARIANA :(((((((((((((( SCREW YOU, THAT BROKKE MY HEART
***3.5***
Not much to say. It was fine, just not my favorite of her books, but for no real particular reason. Maybe Lenny just came off a little too brash at times? And I think I wanted a little more sports action (which is so weird for me, but I loved Kulti so much that I think that is my new measure for MZ books lol). I did love Grandpa Gus, Peter, and of course Mo, and I thought Jonah and Mo were really sweet together. Anyway. One more down. I'm nearly through the MZ backlog! Only 3 more to go I think.

I’m gonna go ahead and say, this is probably my least favourite Zapata book so far. I usually don’t mind her ridiculous length, but this one didn’t hold up well when coupled with quite a dry plot. I just wanted to be done with it by about the 60% mark.
This book reminded me of From Lukov With Love in a lot of ways, which was both a good and a bad thing. I like that book, but I didn’t like how much the protagonists of both book were identical. From speech patterns to the way they talk to the way they’re described - Jasmine and Lenny felt like the exact same person and it was just disappointing.
I think the premise for this book was cute, though if I’d have paid attention to the synopsis I probably wouldn’t have read it. It has babies and second chance romance - two tropes I’m not usually a fan of. This book has given those some redemption, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I ended up enjoying it and not letting my preconceived notions get in the way. The baby however I feel did stunt the plot a little bit, like the whole book felt repetitive because they were just going through the same motions and the same arguments day in day out.
Along those lines, the writing in general was just very repetitive and at times unnatural. It’s a very MZ thing, having characters do things or say things that cringe me out. In here, our protagonist says the word ‘bish’ out loud which I’m pretty sure took 20 years off of my life span. It’s just a tiny ick, but it does bug me. In the description, characters were constantly getting full named which is another pet peeve of mine in books - who even does that in real life? On a frequent basis?! It became so repetitive and annoying.
The romance itself was super cute, though the angst did annoy me. We kept having Jonah say ‘let me explain myself!’ for days and then explaining nothing. It was so frustrating to read, there was a lack of communication for no reason and the reader was kept in the dark for a very underwhelming and somewhat illogical explanation of events. If you’re both sitting there having a conversation anyways, just say what you need to say and get it over with. It annoyed me. Jonah himself was completely lovely though, a complete cinnamon role of a love interest. I loved him.
For all of my complaining, I liked this book overall. You really do go on an emotional kind of journey with these characters, especially since its heavy on the family element, and it’s pretty beautiful. The ending actually made me emotional. I am still the biggest hater of the whole ‘20 years later…’ style epilogue - but this was perhaps one of my ‘favourites’ for lack of a better word.

It's amazing that Mariana Zapata can write such a slow burn that moves so glacially and yet keeps me involved. This is a second chance romance. My favorite quote is regarding finding a person who has made mistakes but learned from them. And I liked that.
The only question I have is what happened to all of his postcards!? Did I miss something? Why didn't she receive them? And where are they sitting?
This is a second read and I enjoyed it. It's a bit repetitive in the language but I still enjoyed it.
I listened to the audiobook and it's interesting that they used a male voice for only Jonah's speaking parts. I loved that choice. His voice sounds delicious.
