People who complain of flat characters in this book are wrong. What Druon has done and quite masterfully is distill each character to his/her essence. He captures the mindset of medieval people of different classes a lot better than most writers of today who are busy shoving modern themes into the past.
I didn't like the style where the narrator makes comments about the event or people. It pulled me out of the story, but that's a matter of personal preference. Druon had also so many interesting subplots (all of them a tributaries of the main plot that carries Filip the Fair to his poignant end). I found myself craving a whole book about a minor character like Everard.
