This came to me highly recommended, and I found it a disappointment. The killer's explanation of their motive and thought processes was believable and moving, but the crime itself was implausibly silly – even after it was explained.
Ellery himself is a fun character, and he occupies an entertaining milieu. And I'm amused by the fact that the story is technically a locked-room mystery, but without featuring a Carr-style impossible crime.
But in the balance, to me, it doesn't live up to the hype.

One of those detectives that try to show off how smart they are. Dialogue rambles and gets convoluted.

Moderate: Misogyny, Murder, Toxic relationship, Death, Infidelity, Pregnancy, and Adult/minor relationship
