Entertaining, but fairly generic. Sixteen-year-old me probably would have given it 5 stars.
SpoilerI also could have done without the student-teacher romantic relationship.

I grabbed this book out of the Stacks at work, in frantic need of something to read while eating lunch on my own. Surprisingly delightful! Well-written fantasy with a believable plot.

this was so much better than i expected it to be (and not what i expected at all). caz is the opposite of any typical fantasy hero and his journey is equally different, yet not any less compelling.

As always a great book, even with upside down Spain.

I didn't like it a lot at first but I ended up really enjoying it.

As burned out on fantasy as I've found myself lately, this book was a refreshing change. Tightly plotted, but weaving a rich mythology and world into every scene. Even without multiple volumes and dozens of characters, the world building shone through.

ok but what was that romance

It's been a lot of years since I read this, and I'd forgotten how WONDERFUL it is.
