i have been meaning to reread this for years and now I regret waiting so long. Just as good as The Vorkosigan Saga.
5 stars tells the review that I cannot find words for.
I would like to mention what happened to me today. For those of you who have read the book may get a chuckle out of this. I had just finished reading the most crucial and beautiful part of the book. I had 2 more chapters to read till the end of the book. I had just arrived home, reminiscing over what I just read. Walking up to my porch I saw on my lawn a big crow feather. Talk about getting chills up your spine!

Was mistakenly told this was a romance and i was fine with it not being one but the romance that IS present had a weird age gap and i figured my time would be better used elsewhere
Книга не просто со счастливым концом. Книга с карамельно-приторным счастливым концом, написанная по дотошным мечтательным лекалам некрасивой девочки в пубертате. Все плохие умерли, проклятие разрушено, все хорошие победили, принялись писать стихи, переженились и собрались жить долго и счастливо (хвала богам, мне не нужно читать продолжение этой тягучей патоки, даже и знать не хочу, существует ли оно).
Затянутые описания, недержание мыслей у главного героя, который свою Страшную Тайну разве что коровам в поле не рассказал, а так всем, до того смог дотянуться. Несогласованность его образа, какие-то картонно-шаблонные злодеи.
Да, я знаю, что книга получила кучу премий. Я даже в курсе, за что и вполне допускаю, что еще пару лет назад я бы ее оценила прям по вау-шкале. Но некоторые книги нужно читать вовремя или не читать уже вообще. Потому что вместо положительных эмоций остается недоумение, досада на зря потраченные несколько поездок в метро и совсем немного жалости, что не добралась до этой сказки для неповзрослевших взрослых лет эдак 15 назад, в свои золотые 20 лет.
В сухом остатке: детям читать, взрослым - только, чтобы вспомнить детство. И да, женская фантастика - это испытание для сильных духом only.

I'm not sure I'll be able to convey my love for this book emphatically enough, but here goes.
This book is a full-on meaty stew of a meal. Other authors might have milked this story for an entire trilogy (and here this is, just book 1), and yet it also works as a standalone. I will of course be continuing this series, but things are wrapped up in such a way that you don't have to.
I love Cazaril so, so much. I appreciate every one of his good qualities so much that it makes me happy whenever another character sees and appreciates them too.
Everyone gets to have agency in this story. Even those caught in a curse from the gods can choose whether to fight back, and they each do so in their own way. But at the same time, Caz also learns there is value in surrender.
I'm just gonna have to sit with this one for a while, much like The Goblin Emperor. My heart is so full.
