i generally enjoyed this book and thought it was a captivating little mystery. i was pretty uncomfortable with the depictions/mentions of sexual assault though…. just didn’t think it needed to be in the book especially for ryukis character…. will probably still read the other books though because i’d like to know how this story really ends.

Really love the atmosphere. Story is well written and I like the overall theme of the story. Hated Asakawa. Don’t know how I feel about one of the big reveals (yea that one)

Este libro estuvo muy bueno!
Yo ya había visto la adaptación cnematográfica y me había encantado y tenía miedo de que no me gustara el libro porque ya me sabía la trama.
Pues estaba completamente equivocado!! El libro es bastante diferente a la película en muchos aspectos y me mantuvo intrigado todo el tiempo.
Entendía la frustración de tener muy poco tiempo y quería saber como se lograría todo al final, y la verdad no me descepcionó!
Muy buena historia.

Well, it’s pretty clear why they cut what they did out of the movie. The first half is utterly fantastic, even knowing what’s going on, the writing and mystery around the deaths, tape, and cabin are superbly handled and it’s not remotely surprising this became a phenomenon. The second half… struggles. Some of it is due to a level misogyny that feels immensely outdated, even if the books errs on it being wrong. Some of it is due to over explaining the psychic mumbo jumbo it uses to make things make sense. But then, when they inevitably reach the well, it all just… works. And then we’re off to the races with everything connecting, strongly, in a way I didn’t think it’d pull off. It definitely has its problems but as the origin of such a massive cultural touchstone, it’s definitely worth investigating (and handles the science aspect WAY better than the latter films in the series).

After being given a tip by a cabbie, reporter Kazuyuki Asakawa decides to further investigate the mysterious, simultaneous deaths of four teenagers — one of whom was his niece. What he discovers is a videotape that the four of them watched together exactly one week before their deaths. This brief tape contains several inexplicable images and is followed by the message that he, too, will die in exactly seven days, unless he completes a charm that has conveniently been erased. Now, Asakawa is in a race against time to decipher the images on the tape and uncover the charm to save his life. Much like the movie version of this book, starring Naomi Watts, this book is just plain weird. It takes nearly two-thirds of the book to really get into it and the attention grabbing is minimal at best. Also, much like the movie, I felt like one important point was left unexplained in the end, specifically, how the hell does a videotape kill you? Even the weirdest of Stephen King's psychic phenomena-based novels has a nice tidy explanation.
