I have seen the grudge many times but I never knew it was originally a book. It includes Sadako and her story, but what surprised me the most was the relationship between the two main leads. The main character is fine, he reacts normally to the predicament he is put in. His best friend however is a psychopath. Just a real weirdo. He was a rapist?? Or lied about it??? Just an oddball.

Excellent. The story is very different from both the American and Japanese films. I'll definitely be checking out the next two books.

There’s a reason the story told in this book has become iconic.
It was difficult for me to separate the American films from what I was reading for the longest time. I came in with expectations that I quickly realized were things Hollywood added to make the story more… well, Hollywood. At first, it left me feeling like this book was slow, or uneventful.
Once I was able to leave behind the film and fully embrace the novel, it gripped me. The last quarter is a masterclass in suspense, and even though I knew more than the protagonist due to the film, the final reveal wasn’t any less thrilling and haunting. Actually, this book did so well at navigating itself, I felt more jolted here than I did watching the film, despite the similarities.
There was still so much to unpack with the characters, and the dread behind every page was captured perfectly.
I did not think this is the review I would be writing when I first started, but all of my initial issues were my own fault.
A classic, in my opinion.

A really great horror read, very different than either version of the movie. Did take a star off because some things just haven't aged well and did leave a sour taste with me (representation of intersex people and one of the main characters is said to assault women although maybe not? That's a mystery at the end of the book.)
