The atmosphere and pacing was excellent. However the plot was kind of underwhelming. I did not care too deeply for the main character but the story of the women they were uncovering was very intriguing. The inclusion and discussion around gender and identity was interesting but very of its time.

Slow build up in the first 2/3rds of the novel with a very fast, somewhat unsatisfying/rushed final 3rd. I would have liked to see more emphasis on the manifestation of grief and the life that Sadako led, ultimately ending in the birth of her curse. Otherwise, very nice October read that was tense and foreboding.

I didn't find this book to be scary either as I am very rarely frightened by books. I did have high hopes for it, as the American film version is one of the few movies that really creeped me out. (I'm a big horror film fan but none have stayed with me as long as The Ring. I can freak myself out just thinking about it.) I found the book interesting, but not scary. As mentioned by others, it is sufficiently different enough from the films to be engaging and I liked the differences very much. I'm curious about the Japanese version; would like to see it to compare it to this book and the American film.

I will say, though, that I found the writing in this book to be very simplistic. Maybe that is why I didn't find it eerie -- there just wasn't enough description for me. Not a vivid enough picture was painted. I didn't find myself very sympathetic to the characters either, though their plight was one that should definitely evoke sympathy.

All in all, I did enjoy reading it, but primarily for comparative purposes. If I wasn't such a fan of the film, I don't think I'd care for the book very much. I suppose this is one of the VERY rare times I liked the movie better.

Picked this book up to try something from a genre I’d never read previously. In the end, I felt like this book was more thriller than horror, although there were a few passages in the front half of the book that made my spine tingle. I liked it once the plot got moving, but felt that there were so many convenient discoveries that I was occasionally removed from the story. Ryuji- the main characters sidekick throughout the quest - was an interesting character, and I found the twist at the end regarding him more interesting than parts of the mystery. The ending I found pretty unsatisfactory.

Ring was another interesting foray into translated fiction. The way Suzuki wrote about women mirrored just slightly the way that Murakami frames women, leading me to question if it’s just a cultural mindset not necessarily judgement.

Gripping until the very last page, I devoured this book.

i found the story pretty compelling and i liked the ending. the SA, transphobia, and misogyny were pretty tough, but unfortunately not surprising.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand the plot is pretty creepy and it’s good horror. On the other hand the MC and his bestie are the worst kinds of men: one is a jerk who possibly employs violence against women as a form of entertainment(?) and the other is a wormy little whiner who complains about his devoted wife. I don’t know if I’ll read the sequel I haven’t decided yet.

the movie traumatized me for life in junior high (not exaggerating) but the book is a lot less scary
