fuck ryuji and asukawa fr but if you really think about it, couldn’t they (asukawa, his wife, and baby) take turns rewatching the tape once a week to restart their death timers without involving any more of the public? like sure who knows how long that could’ve lasted if it causes them to go mental (poor baby 😭) but like imagine if they did that instead tho…

Me sorprendió que fuera una serie. También fue más entretenido de lo que esperaba, aunque creí que me daría tanto miedo como la película en su tiempo. No fue así.
The goal of reading this was to add to a property I already loved but, as it turns out, almost everything it added, I was happy not knowing about in the first place. The only bit I liked was the more firm connection between the videotape and a virus, but that's present enough otherwise to not be that big a get. Ryuji was hard to care about given what we knew about him and I normally would care about that character so much but it was like the author went out of his way to be like: no, absolutely not. So, okay, you win, I don't. Asakawa was so unpleasant with and detached from his family and he didn't seem to care about them much so I was honestly surprised by his decision at the end, the only way that makes sense is if he just thinks of them as an extension of himself and then I can see it.
All the best parts of this were definitely mined already, imo, and everything left should've been.

interesting but not anything great. the horror/mystery aspects were enjoyable, but multiple main characters being shameless rapists and transphobes was not. first published in japanese in 1991, i can understand that some of the social aspects aren't approached from a modern angle, but it's repulsive to read about multiple rapes in a book about a haunted tape where the sexual assaults don't have anything to do with it, and even if they did, sexual assault as a plot device is tired at this point anyways. maybe one of these days i'll watch the movie in the hopes that it's better than the book
