“If he saw her again, he’d get the truth from her. Now and always, his duty lay with his king.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars

After finishing The Blood King, I was a bit disappointed with the overall flow of the story, but hopeful that I would like this book more. I did, in fact, like this one more, but not enough to bring back my love for the series.

The third installment in the inferno rising series centers on Meira Amon, another Phoenix sister, capable of creating portals with mirrors. And Samuel, loyal Warrior of the Black Clan. When Meira promises herself to the Black Clan King, Samuel resolves to be true to his king and stand by, even though he’s pretty sure Meira is his mate. When complications drive them to escape together, they’ll have to keep each other safe and find out what happened to the missing king.

Honestly, I had high hopes, higher than they should have been. I really liked Samuel and Meira’s dynamic and I was hoping that would change everything for me. In reality, it’s the same series, new characters.

I feel like these books focus on the overall action plot that connects the books more than it focuses or cares about the romance. So the romance always feels underdeveloped and I never actually care about the action.

From the beginning, this world has been at war with the Rotting Red King, who is trying to cement his rule as High King. Even after three books, I’m not invested in this at all. I’m here for the lovey-dovey stuff and I’m withering.

It’s sad because I love so many tropes at play here, but they’re done with all the fun taken out. I even love mate tropes, but this series just makes it so annoying. The whole mating system in this series changes based on what kind of creature you are and it kind of throws all the fun of it away. I was constantly frustrated with the story.

The pacing is also something to endure. The story lags a lot in the middle, slowing down at 20% through the book and picking up around 80%. Where all the story is jammed.

TL;DR: Like I said, I liked the dynamic with Samuel and Meira. I like their characters, but that’s all the I liked and in a book that doesn’t always focus on them, it wasn’t enough.

IDK why I keep reading this series

I liked this book. I love seing Meira's powers and her coming into herself, but I'll say I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the first 2. While the first 2 had a few moments that made me frown, overall the books were enjoyable because we got to see the main leads fall for each other with very little cringe-level issues. This book not so much.

A few spoilers, so beware!

I did not like how for most of the book Meira was promised to another, so she kept fighting her feelings for Sam.. until they thought the king had *died* then she was all over him. It was super cringe.

THEN, they find out Gorgon is not dead, of course, so now they gotta deal with the cringe-y 'we already mated' issue. ugh I felt so much second hand anxiety watching them try to deal with this issue. not fun.

THEN, of course, Owen has to rectify this issue by killing Gorgon. For real this time. ughhhh. Would've prefered him abdicting or something. He seemed like a good guy.

Also- Maul died! Love the twist about who Maul is, but still!! If he was going to die it should be after Angelika is safe.

I felt that the books should've kept to the 'Phoenix's choose, but they choose who they love' b/c Meira not doing that led to a lot of issues in this book that made it less enjoyable for me.

Lastly- I can't wait for Angelika's book, but I really really really don't want her to end up with a wolf shifter! I want her to fall in love with a dragon and see her powers develop. Fingers crossed.
