TW: mentioned in review and book: assault, repeated. Ignoring of consent, repeated. Gaslighting, repeated. Poor treatment in general, repeated. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK IF THESE THINGS TRIGGER YOU

If I could give this book a worse rating, I would. Reading about Maxu assaulting Meg, and violating her boundaries and consent over and over again was absolutely appalling.

To watch her be gaslit by not only the guards meant to be keeping her safe and the other human women made it even worse. To watch her treated poorly by all the other Clecanians because she was rejecting her “mate” without any question as to why was the cherry on top. No attempt to make sure that she was safe. The fact he’d rather do reconnaissance instead of talking to Meg and get her opinion or meet her needs? And I’m supposed to think of this guy as a love interest? No discussion of consent as it pertains to human women? No interest in trying to gain said consent. On top of everything, the main female character has already been abused and forcibly married off before coming to clecania.

I’m so angry. Fuck the author for this trashfire. No trigger warnings in the book at all, no website mentioned in the audiobook where any of them could be found. Since I was listening to the audio, I was caught unaware

So. This book was full of world building (descriptions of Everything), a change of scenery (to what felt like a whole different world and not a new city) and more stuff i didn't like. I guess this is the sci-fi fantasy part of the series. It did not help that i read maladeks book right before this and loved it, so this fell entirely too flat.
Here's what I liked about Maxus book: maxi recognized meg as his mate the very first time he sees/ smells her, and his marks appear then too. That i was missing in most of the other books in the series. But. That was possibly about it. The rest didn't really work for me. (Except for some romantic scenes and lines...)
