4.5

This was a beautifully written story that showed an intimate glimpse into a group of peoples’ life. I loved the ending and how all the stories intertwined.

Although the writing had some of the most beautiful metaphors and descriptions I’ve ever read, it was slightly difficult to decipher sometimes because of the interesting writing style. Still, I really enjoyed reading this.

4.5 Stars

This book was exceptionally well-written. Even though he writes long-winded sentences, I felt like they really fit with the story and allowed his writing style to shine. He also has such a knack for creating incredibly detailed, emotionally complex characters in a very small amount of pages. Each of these perspectives was fleshed out, and I felt emotionally connected to all of them. These characters come from such different walks of life, but Ryan gave each one of them equal care and attention. It is amazing just how well he is able to write such different characters. Additionally, the way the three story lines converged in the end was just perfect.

I would highly recommend this book, and I can't wait to read the rest of Ryan's books.

This may be my favourite book of all time. I could read it all over again immediately.

Three very distinct men laid out for us in three different styled character studies then tied poignantly together. I was moved and engaged.

there’s something intrinsic to a Donal Ryan novel about which I truly admire. I’m not sure if I know what that ‘something’ is — maybe it’s an open-minded view of the human condition, perhaps it’s an understanding of the outsider within all of us, maybe it’s the revolutionary want of love between two human beings, I’m not sure. But I do really, really like it.
there’s an unfortunate distance between Donal and myself, however, that I’m not too fond of. Well, it’s conflicting, in something like FALAQS I get it and actually it works a lot better than in All We Shall Know where that is much more about the person rather than their situation, as FALAQS is. tell ya what — I know what it is, I want DR to be read by more people, but these people need to be willing to slow down, to put on the mask of their narrator (all 3 of whom in this are very well projected — Farouk is eternally likeable in a dire situation, Lampy is a bit of a twat but you’ll love him because he’s that cheeky chappy and John is just.. jeez... he’s a beautiful man (but still a bit of a twat.) and see the world through their eyes — and I’m not sure people want/need that.
it’s full of beautiful writing, unforgettable narrators, I’m just not sure it’s got enough of a backbone to be thrown into the masses and devoured.

3.5 stars. Beautiful lyrical prose. I haven't read this kind of writing in a long time. The book tells the story of three people that have nothing on common with each other but whose lives are connected (you only find this out how at the end of the book). The first story about the refugee and the last story about a man living in his brother's shadow is absolutely captivating. I going myself drifting off at the second story. It wasn't as engaging. Overall, decent read.
