I was not sure what to expect of this short book, but this was a really cute and entertaining read. I really loved and enjoyed the world this story was set in and the characters were quite nice and refreshing too. The only downside is that it's so short! I could have read on for much longer!

So, what to expect when picking up this story: An interesting take on the fairytale world, fairytale vibe and royalty. Likeable characters, LGTB presentation, secrets that are discovered and secrets staying hidden. Some nice twists on well known tales and a scandalous newspaper searching for the big scoops.

I've really enjoyed myself a lot and I can't wait to read how this story continues.

super fun! follows two newbies -- one reporter, one guard -- as they get involved in the Scandalous and Exciting world of fairy tale royalty :D

(several other characters get povs but that doesn't fit my neat summary okay? it's tansy rayner roberts, you know she's all about the excellent ensemble casts)

A rather entertaining (if short) novella, set in the Charming Kingdom several years post-Cinderella. The story are simple and fun, the characters engaging (although we hardly get to know them), and it's over before you know. Each chapter is probably much shorter than it needs to be, but that allows for more joke chapter headlines, so you have to take the good with the not so good.

Adored this completely ridiculous take on fairy tales, and what it might be like to live in a world where those stories are real. And the completely random romance b-plots.

This story has no delusions of being a serious story, nor does it need it. It lurches from one up-ended trope to another, and somehow manages plot, characterisation, and world-building in the process.

Loved listening to Tansy Rayner Roberts' podcast Sheep Might Fly where you too can listen to lots of her short stories!

I love Tansy's short fiction and this story is no exception, it has just been so much fun! And I do not mind the serial format at all. The short bits are so much easier to fit into my life than full hour story podcasts, that I just rarely have the time/headspace for.

The story is about a two men living in a fairytale kingdom: The new quill (read journalist) and the new garde. They get swepped into intrigue of a kind that would ONLY happen in a fairytale kingdom - and it is just so much fun. It is winking at the audience, but it isn't annoying in anyway.

The story is so playful and loves all the fairytale tropes, so if you find that silly and stupid, this is not the story for you, but if you like me likes story that play with those tropes, this is perfect.

I am very much looking forward to more of these stories in the future. I wonder if Tansy with write enough for a small collection of these.

Check your fairytale assumptions at the door. This madcap adventure of gossip rags, soldiers & royalty caught me out when I first heard it on Sheep Might Fly.

Oh, this was so much fun. So much quiet sniggering very early in the morning. But also ... ridiculously clever. Because of course it is because it's Tansy.
