Didn't love it. Not Proulx's best. Some good writing, but not convincing context.

Annie Proulx's writing is so rich I can't read it quickly - I have to savor every word.

Really enjoyed this one. Proulx seems to be able to paint the picture of US rural life without making small town folks saints or stereotype red necks. The people are colourful (and as a small town girl, they are more than believable), with quirks, short comings and grit that should be admired. She touches upon major issues without allowing it to be THE issue of the book. There is a story (stories! - A series of them) which entertains before preaching.

It's like reading old newspapers from your hometown...in a good way. Not earth-shattering fiction, but pleasant. Good for the trip home to your roots.

I am a fan of many of her other books, but this one seems shamefully rushed and in dire need of a good editor.
funny fast-paced

God I love the way she writes okies! Excellent stories of individuals in a unique place and time.

Slow and spare, the prose imitates the landscape. It made me want to see panhandle Texas just once. The characters and the interweaving stories are good enough that you have to forgive the somewhat deus ex machina ending.
