i’d like to preface this review by saying that i do not consider myself a writer, by any stretch of the imagination. that being said, this book was recommended to me by a lovely writer friend of mine, and i do consider myself a creative by nature. first, and most importantly, lamott’s sense of humor had me stifling laughter in more public spaces than i can count. but, beyond the biting wit, i think that this book is for any creative that’s ever felt like their craft has lost meaning or direction. lamott’s outlook on writing, people, and life is a breath of fresh air — it’s honest, without being abrasive, and between pages of solid writing advice are little nuggets of wisdom that i have found myself reflecting on even weeks after finishing the book.
it’s not a book for everyone, certainly. but i think whether you dream of writing professionally, you scribble anecdotes in a private journal, or you splash paint on a canvas pollock-style — there is a kindness in the ways that lamott breaks down the process of breathing life into concepts. and honestly, sometimes we all just want a good giggle, and i am certain that lamott will catch you off guard with that kind of relief, in ways that you didn’t even know you needed.

This is a wonderful book about writing and the reasons writers choose to write. Very inspirational and a wonderful reminder.

My favorite book about creativity
I could listen to Ann Lamott go on about anything. This book has helped me see past my own self-doubt and find joy and purpose in my writing. Highly recommend!

There was a lot that was good in this book. Some sparking ideas, some validation. I do feel that it is a bit dated, and I bristled almost every time she brought up Andy Black or BIPOC people. Still, I appreciate her candor if not always her humor.
I was not prepared for how much this author makes off hand jokes about autistic and mentally ill people (I’m autistic).
Most of the advice is very basic, I mainly tried to read this book because it helps finds writing passions; I ended up trying to look up the specific advice and (for now at least) isn’t very helpful.

I wouldn’t say its that funny, to be honest, but it has some great, albeit maybe a tad generic at times, writing advice that did genuinely get me roaring to write. I appreciated her honesty when it came to the ugly emotions that accompany writing as well as the glimpses into the writer network one can have with other writers
