Do you ever read a book and at the very end just go "what the fuck". That is how I would summarize this book. Very rarely do I have to put a book down because it is too gory but oh boy I had to take some breaks with this book. Turns out Nevill's built up of dread and intense cannibalistic scene were a lot for me at times.

Some great scenes, but ultimately didn't grab me

I had a really difficult time getting into this book-- there are numerous time jumps over the course of the first quarter of the novel, so as soon I started to get invested in some characters, the story would suddenly move forward a few years. Over and over.
The individual scenes are brutal and scary, but I wasn't particularly invested in anybody even after we got past most of the time jumps.
