2021 ATY Challenge - a book related to a codeword from the NATO phonetic alphabet (set in QUEBEC)

I don't believe this story is over. We shall see.

3.5 stars

Enjoyed this entry in the series. Not sure about the ending and I'm hoping we'll get more about that in the next book. But, loved Gamache, as always!

Poor Gabrie!!
This series really picked up for me in the last couple books. I'm enjoying getting to know the characters more and how much their own relationships evolve.
This book was great, I loved the folktale that was the undercurrent throughout. And I, much like Gamache let me feelings for the characters cloud my sight and I didn't see the end coming as much as I should have. It was obvious at the end but I really didnt want to believe it.
Also, still hate Peter. How dare he sabotage Clara. I'm glad things worked out for her regardless.

I really enjoyed this one a lot, maybe one of my faves so far in this series! We're back to the old Hadley house and so much more.  Our Three Pines friends are all here and there's a lot of depth in this one and I feel like the first where I felt like it was truly a mystery book, not a detective book if that makes any sense. I feel like the other books there was a mystery but it was a vehicle to get to know the characters but I felt I was trying to unravel this one from the beginning to the end and it all felt really puzzling and mysterious in a great way!  Can't wait to read on!

Book #5 is BY FAR my favorite of the Gamache series so far. As always, there is a murder, but the crime is simply what pulls all the folks of Three Pines into the story together. With each book, I've learned a bit more and more about the residents of Three Pines. This particular book was so so so good. For the first time, I saw beneath the cover of a quaint, cozy, hard-to-find village with quirky town folk and found themes of escape, insecurity, and greed among the residents of Three Pines. And yet, Louise Penny still manages to convey the beauty of the area, the community spirit of the residents, and the quirkiness of the people that we all love and enjoy -- making the inhabitants of Three Pines all the more lovable, pitfalls and all.

NOTE: If you have not read the previous 4 books, it would be hard to get all this out of book 5. You have to know the characters. While I have enjoyed each book at varying ratings (3 to 4), book 5 is definitely a 5 STAR for me.

I'm calling this a 3.8 rounded up to a 4. In this series, I've read #1, #2, and now #5. Why? Well, the whole point of me reading about Three Pines was to get to book #6 which takes place in Quebec City -- a place I plan to visit very soon.

I thought book 1 was alright but I wasn't blown away; and book 2 I thought was ridiculous and I wanted to abandon the series. I came to a compromise: I skipped #3 and 4, going for 5 because GoodReads reviewers made the case that book 6 wraps up something that happened in 5. So. All that backstory to say, I've completed The Brutal Telling just now and enjoyed it the most so far of the three that I've read.

I don't feel that I missed anything by skipping ahead, but what do I know?

In this book, the mystery is: who was the person killed? Why?

And, I found the exploration and resolution interesting and mostly entertaining. You have to just roll with where the author wants to take you and not overthink it too much. Suspend that disbelief.

I still have quibbles with how the author depicts minorities, BUT I will say, she had a character struggle with and ultimately call out a person for using anti-gay slurs about her friend. Standing up for her friend cost her.

I'm looking forward to book 6 and depending on how that goes, maybe I'll continue with the series after all.
