Inspector Gamache tries to solve the murder of a seemingly homeless man who turns out to be a recluse with an extensive collection of priceless antiques. As Gamache and his team peel back the layers to solve this case, the townspeople of Three Pines themselves will find that the secrets uncovered will shake how they view their town.

2020:
Reread after finishing book 16. This book is so atmospheric and haunting. Even mostly remembering the big twists it was hard to put down in the second half. Really want to pick up the next one again ASAP.

Interesting to note that I finished this one on the exact same day, 5 years apart. Purely coincidental.

2015:
I'm still digesting the twist in this one. I also felt a greater need to suspend reality in this one than the previous, but I'm still a big fan of the Chief Inspector.

I've read the first five of these Inspector Gamache novels in a row, so perhaps I should take a break. I thought this was the weakest, although I see many really liked it.

I think my favorite Louise Penny so far. atmospheric in the extreme and made me want to pack bags and move to all of the destinations. I also loved the complexity of the ending.

I found this one just a little too dark and sad. Strange criticism for a murder mystery I know, but there you have it.

Better than the previous two, for sure. Still, sometimes characters' motivations seem so contrived and nonsensical. But the overall mystery was well-done.
